Oily Skin

A detailed routine for oily skin

AM:

  • Step 1: Cleanser

Cleansing in the morning is essential for oily skin. It removes dirt, sweat and excess sebum. Use a non-foaming (we’re not a fan of foaming cleanser on this blog as they’re filled with harsh chemicals that strip away your skins’ natural oils and good bacteria) cleanser that has either charcoal or salicylic acid. Charcoal or clay will help draw out impurities like a magnet and salicylic acid helps to remove dead skin cells which causes oil and dirt build up.

  • Step 2: Chemical Exfoliant

Glycolic Acid is a powerhouse ingredient for oily skin. It helps reduce excessive oil and prevent the plugging of pores that leads to acne breakouts.

  • Step 3: Serum

Niacinamide and Zinc serum is perfect for oily skin. Niacinamide and Zinc combat blemishes, congestions and sebum over-production. Alternatively, Salicylic acid serum is great too as its anti-inflammatory and helps even skin tone, exfoliate skin, and combat excess oil.

  • Step 4: Moisturiser with SPF

Apply a light moisturiser that will lock in all the goodness of the previous steps. Make sure to get a moisturiser with a good SPF rating. Sun protection is essential for all skin types, especially if using any acids or retinoids.

  • Throughout the Day: Blotting Paper

Gently blot the sheet over the face, concentrating on your oily areas such as nose & forehead to quickly remove excess oil & shine.

PM:

  • Step 1: Double Cleanse

For your first cleanse use a micellar water or oil cleanser. I know what you’re thinking, OIL!? But actually fighting oil with oil works. This is gentle on the skin and easily removes makeup, dirt, OIL and SPF. For you second cleanse use your charcoal or clay cleanser again for a deep clean that combats blemishes and unclogs pores.

  • Step 2: Retinol

Apply your serum and let it dry for 15 minutes so it fully absorbs. Retinol will help resurface the skin, reduce wrinkles, unclogs pores, reduces acne and scars. When using a retinol or acids you want to hydrate your skin immediately so spritz your face with your favourite facial mist while you wait.

  • Step 3: Serum/Oil

Hyaluronic Acid serum is perfect for hydrating the skin without leaving excess product on the skin. You may think, why would I want to add more moisture to my skin when it’s already oily? Well, the reintroduction of moisture to the skin is very important. You see, if you strip the skin of its natural oils the skin becomes dehydrated and so overproduces oil! That’s why moisturising after any skin treatments such as retinol or acids is vital. Alternatively, Vitamin E oil is great too as it heals acne scars and nourishes.

  • Step 4: Moisturiser

Don’t skip on moisturiser! It’s important as it seals in your retinol, acids and treatments. I would avoid heavy moisturiser as they may too thick for oily skin, resulting in sitting on the skin which can cause clogged pores. However a regular moisturiser will do. I’d dedicate my lightweight moisturiser for the day time as you have to combat with makeup, outside factors and movement which all cause a build up of oil, dirt and sweat. However, at night you can opt for a slightly heavier moisturiser to make sure your skip is replenished after your retinol.

AM

  • Step 1: Hydrating Cleanser

Start the day with a an oil or cream cleanser. This will gently clean the skin without stripping your skin of moisture.

  • Step 2: Chemical Exfoliant

You may wonder why I’ve added a chemical exfoliant to a dry skin care routine. Surely this will your dry out your skin even more? Fret not! Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid is actually super beneficial for the skin. They help buff away any dead skin cells which reduces dry patches and reveals a smoother, brighter, even skin tone.

  • Step 3: Hyaluronic Acid Serum/Essence

Another Acid! But don’t worry Hyaluronic Acid may sound like another exfoliant but it actually deeply hydrates the skin. You could also use an Essence serum such as dragons’ blood, green tea or rose which add immediate hydration and plump up the skin.

  • Step 4: Moisturiser with SPF

Apply a rich or repairing moisturiser that will lock in all the goodness of the previous steps. Make sure to get a moisturiser with a good SPF rating. Sun protection is essential for all skin, especially if using any acids or retinoids.
